How Do I Qualify as a Driving Instructor?

To qualify, you need to:

Be a ‘Fit & Proper Person', having no Criminal Convictions
Have a relatively Clean Driving Licence, held for a minimum of 4 years

Pass 3 Qualifying Examinations:

Part 1 – Theory & Hazard Perception Tests

You will have to take & pass a 100 Question Theory Test, covering all aspects of Road Procedure; Highway Code Rules & Regulations; Vehicle Operation & Mechanics; Licensing & Law; Driver Training & Testing.  You will have 90 minutes to achieve an overall pass mark of 85%, with a minimum of 80% in each of 4 bands.  You will have access to a Question Bank – but we do not advise memorising the Question Bank.  ‘Short-cutting’ this part of the test can & often does lead to problems in the remaining 2 Qualifying Examinations

This is immediately followed (give or take 3 minutes) by a Hazard Perception Test.  You will need training for this test.  You are shown 14 video clips filmed from the driver’s viewpoint.  You have to click the Mouse Button every time you see a Developing Hazard.  You will be scored on 1 hazard in 13 clips, and 2 hazards in 1 clip.  Each clip will contain many potential hazards, so you will have to concentrate throughout each clip.  The quicker you respond to the scored hazard, the more points you will get.  An immediate response will score 5 points, descending to zero as the Hazard develops further.  You have to achieve an overall score of 57/75 to pass this part of the test

Both parts of this Part 1 Examination have to be passed in the same sitting.  You can take this Part 1 Examination as many times as you need, although with proper training, you should pass first time

Part 2 – Test of Driving Ability

This test comes in 3 parts:

Eyesight Test.  You will need to read a vehicle registration plate at a distance of 90 feet

Maintenance Questions.  You will have to answer 5 ‘Show-Me; Tell-Me’ Questions, relating to basic vehicle checks & maintenance.  You will have to answer each question in such a way that somebody who does not know how to carry out such a check, would then understand what to do.  You will accumulate 1 fault for each wrong answer, to a maximum of 5 faults, when a serious fault would be recorded.

Driving Ability Test.  You will have to drive to a very high standard, for around 1 hour, on a variety of roads, possibly including a motorway.  You will  have to display a very progressive drive, showing excellent forward planning & anticipation skills, demonstrating good awareness & consideration for all other road users.  You may accumulate no more than 6 minor driving errors, which includes any faults made on the Maintenance Questions.  You will carry out all of the following manoeuvres, to a very high standard:

Turn-in-the-Road
Left Reverse
Right Reverse
Reverse Park
Emergency (Controlled) Stop

You have 3 attempts to pass this Part 2 Examination.  If you fail after 3 consecutive attempts, you have to wait 2 years from the date you passed Part 1, before you can retake Part 1, and then move back onto part 2

Part 3 – Test of Teaching Ability

This is normally the hardest part of the Qualifying Examinations, and has to be passed within 2 years of passing Part 1.  Again, you have 3 attempts at passing this Part.  If this is not achieved, you can start again by retaking Parts 1 and 2 after the 2 year period has elapsed

The Part 3 is broken into 2 Phases of 30 minutes each:

Phase 1.  Your Examiner will play the role of either a Beginner, or a Partly Trained Pupil.  You will be given a topic, and you will deliver a ‘driving lesson’ based on that topic.  You will use a briefing, normally with visual aids, to ‘teach’ your ‘pupil’ the theory of the subject.  This will then be followed with on-road practical instruction, where the ‘pupil’ will learn & develop their practical skills.  You will identify any faults committed, analyse them, and offer a remedy.  Further you will use suitable Instructional Techniques, at the appropriate level, to make sure the ‘pupil’ learns & develops their skills.  This is then followed by…

Phase 2.  Here, your Examiner will role play a Trained pupil, or an Experienced Driver, in need of additional training.  Again, you will be given a topic, and a scenario.  If you listen carefully, you will learn the ‘pupil’s’ needs, and again you will teach them at the appropriate level, bearing in mind that tat this stage they will have more experience.

On passing all 3 examinations, you can apply for your Licence to Teach.  On receipt of your Licence (costs £200.00 for 4 years) you may teach drivers for reward.

Sound difficult?

It shouldn’t be, after suitable training! At BLUE CAR School of Motoring we are very aware that this is your Career at stake! So we pride ourselves on offering the following:

1-2-1 Tuition - There will never be more than one trainee in-car at a time. We do not agree with the 'watch others to learn' training system favoured by most national training companies.  There are occasions when this can be beneficial, but this is normally done by sitting in on a driving lesson with a learner (agreed with them in advance), where can you watch teaching in the real world!

Pay-As-You-Go Training - No up-front fees (let alone parting with in excess of £3000!).  You just pay for the hours that you need.  This costs £25.00 per hour for any training done in the Office, or in your vehicle, and £27.00 per hour for any training done in our vehicles.  (Normally pupils are qualifying for under £2000)

ORDIT (parts 1, 2, 3) Approved - The DSA have approved the complete Training Course Plan / procedures & trainer. Be confident that there can be no higher guarantee of quality assured training

Why not arrange to meet us?  We offer a FREE no obligation 1 Hour Meeting where you can meet us, and ask any of those questions that you’re bound to have!  You can look at the Course Plan & Colour Training Visuals that you will need (costs £60.00), and the reference publications you will need to purchase (approx. £50.00).  You can either buy these from us, or from the High Street.
